The 8th ASEAN+3 Student Camp & Teacher Workshop for the Gifted in Science

On January, I got an amazing opportunity to represent Cambodia in The 8th ASEAN+3 Student Camp & Teacher Workshop for the Gifted in Science held in Beijing, China, along with two other friends and a learning facilitator. Under the theme of “Dreamer, Thinker, Maker,” students were divided into teams to design bridges, rockets, soccer robots and 3D printing products. I was in a team to design a bridge with another student from Chinese Taipei. This was a new experience working with someone from another country. It was hard to communicate with him because he doesn’t talk much, and I usually have to ask him for ideas. As a result, my team got a bronze medal. This is the first medal I’ve gotten!

As part of the science camp, we got tours to many places. The first day, we were toured in the Beijing No.35 High School. This school is huge and fascinating. We also visited Beijing technology and science museum. My favorite place that we visited with the team was the Great Wall of China.

After the Science camp has ended, we went to Western Academy Beijing (WAB) to talk to some students there about our experience during the camp and give them presentations about Cambodia and Liger. After that, we got to explore more around Beijing. We got to visit Beijing well-known including Summer Palace, Beihai Park, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. My favorite place was the Summer Palace because it was quiet and tranquil. There were also beautiful structures. I used to see those type of buildings in movies, but it was amazing to see them in real life.

Beijing is a very big capital city with great infrastructure and transportation. Even though I heard people said that the traffic in Beijing isn’t great, I think it’s a lot better than Phnom Penh. Currently, Beijing is working on being environmentally friendly, since this city is one of the main contributors to Climate Change and pollution. One thing that they do to be environmentally friendly is installing solar energy to their public bus. I’m hoping to see Phnom Penh be this developed in the near future!

TEDx ISPP 2016

On the 26th of November, the TEDxISPP occurred at 12:30 pm to 5:00pm at the Blackbox Theater at ISPP. I was one of the 15 speakers, talking about feeding the world’s population. Do you know that there will be about 9 billion people on earth in 2050? This would make it harder to feed everyone! This problem is really interesting to me, which is why I chose to share about this topic with the audiences.

In order to stand up on the stage talking, I did a lot of work before the event actually started. Those things include researching, writing and practicing the speech. This topic is actually connected to one of the topics for my MUN committee, so I used some of that information. My favorite part of the speech was in the last part, where I said: “Please try to cut down your food waste, if you want your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to have enough nourishing food to eat.” I think this is a very strong line that people can relate to.

Going up to talk on the stage wasn’t easy, and it was scary. There were some problems as I went up there, like I couldn’t remember a small part of my speech. But, I think I did very well, because I reflected back to the past year, when I think I couldn’t do something like this. This is an opportunity for me to practice my presentation skill, which a very important one.

Preventative Healthcare

Health is an issue that many Cambodian people are facing. In this Exploration, we picked two main problems, dental and diabetes, to study and raise awareness about. Currently, Cambodia imports a lot of food from other countries, meaning it’s difficult to get food that has a little amount of sugar. Consuming an immense amount of sugar causes dental problem and diabetes. To raise the awareness of those problems, my team researched ways to prevent or reduce the risk of having those issues. We finally created a play to show the drawbacks of having to much sugar in our diet and not brushing our teeth properly. My role was a doctor and I was explaining about diabetes and how we can prevent from having it. We presented the play to two group of students who lived on the Koh Rong Archipelago.

Heart Activity – Pasco

In Biochemistry class, we learned about the circulatory system and we did a lot of activities. One of the activities is called the Heart Activity. We did this lab using the software, called Sparkvue. This activity is where we use EKG tabs to measure the heart rate of a person at rest and after exercise. One of the terms I’ve learned from this experiment is RR interval. It is used to calculate the heart rate at beats per minute or second.

Google Science Fair Video

At the end of the Google Science Fair project, the members who joined it came together to plan a video to get Liger students to join Google Science Fair next year. We spend two hours fiming it. On the weekend I spend about an hour editing this video. I hope you enjoy this video.

STEM Festival

On Sunday the 18th, I went to buiding A and B of the Diamond Island Center to join the Zaman STEM Festival. My partner, Vattey and I were presenting about the biodegradable styrofoam we’ve made for our Google Science Fair. We’ve presented to the Embassador of American , too. There were cameras shooting at us. I didn’t know who it was that I presented to, but I asked my teacher who he was. It was a really great honor to present our project to the embassador and he really likes our idea. We also looked around to see the other people’s project and notice a lot of interesting projects.

Science Story Book – Temperature Affects Density

One of the big projects at Liger for 2015 was creating science books. Everyone was put into pairs and chose a topic about science. My partner and I collaborate to create a book about density, which the book title is “Temperature Affects Density”.

There were a lot processes for creating this book. First, we needed to research about our topic. Next, we started writing the book in English and editing came after that. Then, we translating the book into Khmer. After the translation was finished, our Khmer learning facilitators edited it. Last but not least, we needed to work on the art and putting the writings into Bookwright.
