Pursat Trip Reflection – Agriculture

On the 9th of March, 2015 I went to Pursat Province with Agriculture Group. Phearun and Mary were the facilitators. Below are my reflections for the trip.

Date Reflection
9/3/15 Today is the first day of our trip to Pursat. It is also my first time to Pursat. We packed our stuff on our bus and left liger at 8:00 am. I slept on the bus on the way. We ate lunch in a pagoda called Chan Moni. The old people in there were so kind. The hotel that I sleep in is called Than Sour Thmey. We went to Srer Khmer after we saw our room. I learned a lot there. One thing that I learned is that a type of plant called Chaya is very good for our health . In our lives we can it them up to one to three tons of that plant, if we cook it very well. I also learned one new word: Moringa is a plant that is bitter, in khmer we call it ម្រុុំ. My highlight was to hear all the questions that my friends asked and how they answered them.
10/3/15 Today, I listened to a presentation about rice in the village chief’s house. A lot of people came to the house. Thona presented to us. I learned that there are three big steps of growing rice. First, it’s the growing steps. Second is the product increasing step. The third one is the ripe step. There are small steps in each big steps. Another thing that I learned is that Srer Khmer is located in four provinces, Pursat; Battombong; Siem Riep; Kompong Thom. We went to a villager’s house and ate lunch there. My highlight for the day was to take out the weeds from the rice field. My other highlight was to go to the public school to teach students English. It was a tired and hot day, but it was fun.
11/3/15 Today, I woke up at 6:10 am. I showered and got ready for the trip to Steung Kombot community. We went to the farmer’s house to see the cucumber farm. We picked a lot them. We also saw the bitter melons and long beans. I learned one thing is that they used the papers to cover around the bitter melons because they don’t want the pest and insect to eat the vegetables. The other thing that I learned is that there are three types of fertilizer to put in (the same as rice) and we need 150g of fertilizer to put in 20 L of water. My highlight was to go to the ideal farmer site and see how beautiful the crops are. We took pictures in the trellis of the bitter melon. I like today a lot.

Tropical Forest Ecology Description

Name: Tropical Forest Ecology

Date: May 5 2014 – June 17 2014

Number of People: 12

Essential Questions:

  1. How are organisms and the nonliving environment interconnected in the world around us?
  2.  What is the value of tropical forest ecosystems for Cambodia?
  3. How do humans impact tropical forest ecosystems in Cambodia? Is it possible to use tropical forests sustainably?

Description: In Tropical Forest Ecology we learned about Ecosystems. Ecosystems are a community of organisms that are interconnected and connected with non-living things. We went on two trips because we wanted to experience and see forest directly. We went to Preah Vihear and Koh Kong provinces. When we came back we compared the dry deciduous dipterocarp forest ecosystem (Preah Vihear province) with the evergreen forest ecosystem (Koh Kong province). In Preah Vihear we went to Tmatboey community and in Koh Kong we went to Chi Phat community. We learned about conservation. Conservation means taking care or protecting something. While we learned about conservation, we also learned about sustainable and unsustainable. Sustainable is the action that does not destroy the ecosystem. Unsustainable is the action that destroys the ecosystem. We learned about ecotourism. Ecotourism is tourism that uses and benefits the ecosystem. That is one way that we use ecosystems sustainably. Also we learned about ecological services. Ecological services are the benefits that people get from ecosystems. There are three ecological services such as provisioning services, regulating services and cultural services. Provisioning services are how the ecosystem provides us directly. Ex: Trees give us resin. Regulating services are how the ecosystem regulates the climate. Ex: Trees stop the floods by absorbing the water. Cultural services are how the ecosystems give us something culturally. Ex: Bambuti people use forest plants to smoke for their ceremonies.  We answered our essential questions by using the knowledge that we got from our trips.

Liger Techsupport Description

Exploration Name: Tech Support

Exploration Dates: August 13-Oct 3, 2014

Number of Students: 12

Description: Tech Support was the first Exploration of the second year. In Tech Support we learned about technology and helping other organizations, NGOs and Liger with their technology problems. On the first day Max, our facilitator taught us a little bit about the ideas that he made this Exploration. On the next day we started to learn more about technology. We learned about the parts of computers (hardware). On the second week we had a trip to Singapore! Before that day we prepared our clothes in our backpacks. When we arrived at the airport our parents came to say goodbye to us. We were so sad but we were also happy. On the plane people were talking to each other, some people hurt their ears because it’s hard to hear up there in the sky. When we arrived in Singapore we had to wait for the checker to check our passports. After we finished the check step there was a big surprise for us because Robert (the former head of Liger) came and was waiting for us. He came and said hello to us, we were shocked. About 15 minutes later we went straight to UWCSEA South East Campus. We went there because we want to collaborate with them so we can help NGOs and organizations in Cambodia. There were seven members that worked with us. The first day that we met them we played some games to know and get familiar with each other. Then we found out our host family that we were going to sleep with for two days. Our host families were so friendly and kind. We went there and learned with an IT expert more about the hardware of the computers. On the third day we camped in UWCSEA. Also we went to the science museum to learn and have fun. Sadly on Wednesday we had to leave Singapore. When we came back we went to two organizations to help them. One of them is Tiny Toons. They have problems with their computer. We took five computers to fix at Liger. Luckily we fixed two of them already! The other organization is Green Umbrella, and theyhave a problem with their website so we helped to fix it.

Algebra Description

Name of Course: Algebra B

Learning Facilitator: Jeff

Number of Students: 12

Dates: Aug 11- Jan 20

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: Our group learns about Algebra. We started to learn about negative numbers and positive numbers. First we started to draw a number line about negative numbers and positive numbers. The other thing we do is graphing numbers. It is the biggest thing we need to learn. Sometimes on weekends we have a homework to do from the teacher because we need to work hard on graphing it. Other important areas are solving hard problems. Some of the problems that we can not do we can ask the best teacher. He will not tell you a answer. He will show you a way to do it easier, faster and correctly. The goal is know all the key words and solve a lot of hard problems. Here are the key words: Coordinate Grid means the equation about graphing on the papers. Linear Equations mean that used Y=mx+b to graph on the graph papers. Slope means Y=mx+b and mx is a slope. Intercept means the place that one line and one line touch each other. Variables mean the letters the represent the number. Solve means to do the equation. Equations mean the questions that the teacher put for the kids to do. But it a math word.

Tech and Engineering Description

Name: Tech and Engineering

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 13

Date: 11 August-17 October, 2014

Days we meet: Monday-Tuesday

Course Description: On the first day of Tech and Engineering, we learned about engineering. Its definition is solving problems by using math, science, technology and creativity. On the next day, we started to learn about the process of engineering. It is called the 5D. First, we discover what is the problem. Then, we define the problem. Next, we can design the solution. After that, we develop the plan. Deploy means improve our plan. We had to engineer the chair for the bear. The chairs for the bear were made from Legos. It was the first challenge for the class. One of the criteria was to make the chair so that when the bear sat on it, it does not fall. We also engineered the robot. We learned a lot about programming.

Earth Science Description

Number of Students: 10

Days we Meet: Monday/Tuesday

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 11-October 17, 2014

Course Description: On the first day of our Advanced Enrichment  we were all so excited to study about Earth Science. Earth Science means to study about the Earth and all of the things that are related to the environment and the Earth. In our Advanced Enrichment we studied about the rocks, water, weather and all of the planets in space. In Earth Science class we not just only studied and got the theory from the teacher, we also made  an experiment together in class. For example, the thing that we have been experimenting with is making the sugar crystal experiment, the erosion and some other activity. Our group helps each other and works together as a team, not work alone and always listen to the teacher. At the end of our Advanced Enrichment we all were a little bit sad because we all wanted to study more about all of the things on Earth and all of the things that are really special for the Earth.

Physics Description

Name of Course: Physics

Learning Facilitator: Phearun

Number of Students: 6

Dates: March 30 – June 12

Meet: Monday and Tuesday

Course Description: Our group learned about Physics. When we began to learn Physics we started to learn about the meaning of Physics. First we just listened to the teacher and learnedabout the theory of Physics. Sometimes the teacher told the meaning of important words in class. Then we started to work and learn about the Earth science. When we began to learn about Earth science teacher told us how many planets in solar system. Then the teacher mailed to us one video that showed about the new planet. Then he told us to take notes about that video. When we finished learning about that new planet we started to learn about the gravity on Earth. Then he put the work for us to do. When we all knew and understood about it he taught us about the new topics are buoyancy and density of the water. He also told us about formula how to find out the work that he put for us. So now we just learn more about buoyancy.

Anatomy Description

Name of Course: Anatomy 1

Learning Facilitator: Jo

Number of Students: 12 students

Days We meet: August 12 – October 17

Course Description: In this Advanced Enrichment we learned about body. Our bodies have four systems: Skeletal system (bones), Digestive system (stomach), Respiratory system (lungs), Circulatory system (heart). We watched the video about people’s bodies. The digestive system is the system that help to break down the food and take the nutrients from the food and take the waste out of body. Digestive system is very important for our body because it helps you to break down the food into small pieces. The skeletal system is also important in our body because if you break the bones you will have a big problem. You have to go to the hospital and tell the doctor what is the problem. We also did the presentation for people to listen because we want people to take care of their health. In our group we shared into four teams and one team had three people. We had to share our position in the group: one was patient and two were nurse and doctor. We presented four things and they were Skeletal system, Digestive system, Respiratory system and Circulatory system. People used some clothes to wear when they were acting. We watched the videos and read the books to find information.
